About the O’Toole Awards
Established in 1991 as the “A+ Creative Award,” the four-sided “A” pyramid award was renamed in 1997 to honor John O’Toole, AAAA president and CEO, 1989–1994. All proceeds from the O’Toole Awards competition are donated to the AAAA Foundation, Inc., which awards scholarships to promising multicultural students pursuing degrees in advertising arts.
There are four categories in the O’Toole Awards:
- O’TooleBox—Introduced in 2007, this category honors creative excellence by an agency for a body of work on a single brand campaign idea that is executed across different points of contact. Agencies must show creative excellence and demonstrate original thinking across a minimum of five points of contact, only two of which can be in traditional media.
- Agency Award—Honors creative excellence by an agency for a body of work over the calendar year. Three separate awards are given, to large, mid-size, and small agencies respectively. Agencies may submit any combination of advertising for consideration (covering TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, interactive, direct mail, nontraditional, or outdoor). Only one example per brand is allowed.
- Multicultural Creative Award—Honors creative excellence by an agency for a body of work over current calendar year targeted to a multicultural consumer audience.
- Public Service Award—Honors creative excellence by an agency for its body of work on behalf of a single cause marketer.
