SMM Provides Marketing Support for Advanced Energy 2010

Digital and Social Media Used Extensively to Increase Attendance

smmFor the consecutive second year, Long Island marketing and advertising firm Sanna Mattson MacLeod, Inc. (SMM) provided marketing, advertising and promotional support for the Advanced Energy 2010, New York State’s premier conference on advanced energy technologies and one of the largest events of its kind in America. Held November 8–9 at the New York Hilton, Advanced Energy 2010 attracted more than 1,400 attendees from around the world, an increase of nearly 50 percent over last year. The program featured 17 keynote speakers, including New York State Governor David A. Paterson, SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Energy Security Liaison Scott Pugh. The full conference agenda comprised 49 individual sessions on energy research, policy, and financing, presented by more than 200 subject-matter experts.

SMM’s promotional activities began early last summer with the design and development of the conference website, all social media pages and strategy, the creation of sponsor recruitment materials, and the initiation of an email campaign to prior attendees and individuals with deep involvement in energy research and the energy industry. The email campaign continued through the summer and increased to a weekly frequency during the fall, as more details of the conference emerged. A companion social media campaign employing both Facebook and Twitter was also launched during the summer. In mid-October a radio campaign was launched to increase awareness and attendance within the metropolitan New York area. SMM also designed and produced the 32-page conference program, all event signage, and issued a constant stream of live, informative tweets on what was happening during Advanced Energy 2010.

Advanced Energy 2010 is produced by the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC) at Stony Brook University. A true partnership of academic and research institutions, energy providers and industrial corporations, the mission of AERTC is innovative energy research, education, and technology deployment, with a focus on efficiency, conservation, renewable energy, and nanotechnology applications for new and novel sources of energy.
