This month, Translation and AT&T brought to life the first-ever 5G-connected helmet. The helmet will allow coaches to visually communicate with their players through the lens of the helmet at a speed that keeps up with the pace of the game. This product innovation has the ability to change opportunities within football for the Deaf and hard of hearing community, altering the future of inclusivity in sports for the better.

To coincide with the product innovation, Translation created the Sound of Silence film. The film follows a day in the life of a Gallaudet University football quarterback to demonstrate the communication gap he and other deaf athletes face while on the field, whether it’s being unable to hear the cheers in the stands, the referees blowing a whistle, or your coach calling the next play.

The audio companion to AT&T’s 5G Helmet for Deaf and hard of hearing football players is equally as powerful as the product itself. The film’s narrative is lyrically led by the 1964 classic “The Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel. Only this time, the song is being covered by a UnitedMasters artist named Amira Unplugged, who is partially Deaf herself. The song was produced by Samuel Barnes of the multi-platinum, Grammy winning Trackmasters, along with choir arrangements led by WRLDFMS Tony Williams of the Sunday Service Choir.

AT&T’s mission is to connect people to greater possibilities, and with the film running in nationally televised media while going viral on TikTok, this moment marks a new precedent for accessibility and representation. The song’s new context carries a whole new meaning, even for its original singer, Paul Simon who recently became part of the DHH community himself.

This partnership goes beyond advertising. Translation and AT&T fused technology, sports, and storytelling to unlock product innovation. Rooted in the mission that connecting changes everything, Translation and AT&T collaborated to bridge worlds together within sports and technology to evolve communications for the Deaf community. This reflects Translation’s abilities to field creative solutions that bridge together the core of a brand’s mission with product innovation.

The film is currently airing on all major broadcasts and The Sound of Silence cover will be available on all streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal on Friday, October 20.
