Virginia Legislature Passes Bill Banning Sale of Precise Location Data

Despite veto requests from the 4As and other advertising industry stakeholders, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger (D) is expected to sign SB 338 into law before mid-April, prohibiting the sale of precise geolocation data. The bill marks a significant departure from the existing framework under the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA), which permits businesses to process or sell precise geolocation data with a consumer’s informed consent.
