Enhance your communication skills with our workshop designed for client relationship managers and agency specialists. This 4-week workshop covers key aspects of internal and external communication, addressing the unique challenges each presents. Participants will learn to identify and leverage different communication styles, improve listening techniques, and foster trust and transparency.

This workshop also focuses on navigating conflicts, effective negotiation, collaboration, and providing constructive feedback. Additionally, participants will improve their written communication and incorporate storytelling into persuasive presentations.

Ideal for those with up to five years of experience, this workshop will equip you with the tools to build stronger relationships and communicate more effectively within your agency environment.

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics associated with internal and external agency communications.
  • Be able to identify and utilize different communication styles effectively.
  • Possess enhanced listening skills and a deeper understanding of conversational dynamics.
  • Understand the importance of trust and transparency in communication.
  • Be equipped to navigate conflicts and negotiate solutions effectively.
  • Improve collaborative efforts and feedback processes within teams.
  • Communicate more effectively through emails and other written formats.
  • Craft compelling stories and persuasive presentations.

Course Outline

Module 1: The Fundamentals of Agency Communication Expand
  • The importance of effective communication in building a foundation of trust with clients and colleagues
  • The four communication styles we typically use and how to leverage them for better connection and understanding
  • Active listening techniques and four listening styles we use depending on the situation
  •  Tips and techniques for more productive conversations

Note: Module 1 includes taking the Communication Styles Survey self-assessment and practicing active listening.

Module 2: Put It In Writing Expand
  • How our writing style affects our credibility with clients and colleagues
  • Five questions to ask yourself BEFORE typing a single word
  • Composing emails and texts that recipients actually want to read and act on
  • How to make your writing more relatable and likable

Note: Module 2 includes individual writing exercises during the session.

Module 3: When Things Go Wrong (And They Will) Expand

• Overview of how our brains respond during times of conflict and techniques for navigating  conflict in the moment  • Recognizing and leveraging the five conflict management modes

• Assessing an opposing perspective and gaining insights into the motives and behaviors  behind it

• Anticipating client objections and proactively address them

• The right and wrong way to convey critical feedback

Note: Module 3 includes taking a Conflict Modes self-assessment.

Module 4: Storytelling Techniques for Presentation Decks Expand

• The neuroscience behind great storytelling and how it improves recall and retention of  key material you present

• Overview of the four components of story design and how they’ll help you breathe life  into otherwise dry, boring information

• How to incorporate storytelling techniques into presentation decks to convey key data  points and recommendations in a more persuasive, compelling way

Note: Module 4 includes individual exercises so participants can practice trying out the storytelling techniques covered in this session.

Meet the Facilitator

Gary Duke

Gary Duke headshot

As a former ad agency exec turned trainer and executive coach, Gary has designed and delivered professional development programs for thousands of staff members working in ad agencies, PR firms and other creative companies. Gary knows firsthand the challenges associated with nailing a client presentation, having delivered hundreds of presentations during his 25-year career in advertising. He also served in several client-side leadership roles where he witnessed numerous presentations by agencies (some that were honestly painful to watch) so he brings a unique 360 degree perspective to the subject.

Gary is now Managing Partner, Chief Talent Officer of Wild Blue Yonder, a talent development firm specializing in training and coaching programs for agencies. His clients include many of the industry’s top independent and global ad agencies—including Havas Worldwide, IPG, OmnicomGroup, Leo Burnett, Ogilvy, Publicis, and WPP—as well as some of the world’s top consumer brands. Gary is a recognized thought leader and Talent Development Partner for the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4As), where he wrote and co-produced the curriculum for the 4As Account Management Fundamentals self-paced training program.
