In our crowded marketplace, great stories are more important than ever. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn an effective writing approach for discovering and telling compelling stories. Whether you’re a newly minted professional writing pitches and creative briefs, a mid-career manager heading projects and campaigns, or a leader working on speeches and presentations, this workshop will teach you new ways to make discoveries, find angles that resonate, and create fresh narratives that cut through the noise.

In this four-week series, you’ll learn to:

  • Assess the landscape
  • Strategize for outlet, audience, and client
  •  Ask great questions
  • Find unexpected angles
  • Craft concise, compelling stories
  • Edit and revise to foreground your angle and achieve your goals

In each 90-minute session, you’ll practice new techniques for strategizing, writing, assessing, and editing. You’ll walk away with skills you can put to work immediately.

Week 1: What makes a successful angle? Expand

How can you use a great story to cut through the noise

We’ll focus on:

  • Goal setting
  • Assessing and choosing materials and foci
  • Assessing the landscape, key stakeholders and audiences: effective storytelling for differing outlets
  • Assessing angles that work—and those that do not
Week 2: Finding a fresh take, asking questions Expand

How can you start strong and get things done efficiently—without falling into the template trap? How do you get beyond the same old stories to find unexpected and compelling angles?

We’ll focus on:

  • Writing methods to get things moving
  • Using questions to disrupt certainties: turning what you don’t know into a valuable storytelling asset
  • Methods for finding and evaluating productive questions
  • Generating narratives: getting from questions to stories
Week 3: Structuring and drafting Expand

How do you implement your angle, defeat the blank page, and keep control of your storytelling? How can you use structure to effectively develop and center your angle?

We’ll focus on:

  • Goal-centered planning
  • Writing for discovery
  • Turning questions into angles and ledes
  • Angle-driven outlining
  • Building purposeful paragraphs
  • Choosing tone, voice and style to drive your story
  • Overwriting, underwriting: how to get it just right
Week 4: Assessing and editing Expand

How do you ensure that your message is getting across in the right way to the right audience?

We’ll focus on:

  • Assessing the success of your angle
  • Assessing structure and content
  • Quick, effective methods for realigning and redrafting
  • editing for cohesion and clarity
  • editing for tone, voice, and style

Meet the Facilitator

Gwen Hyman

Gwen Hyman

Gwen Hyman is the founder of Workshop. Her mission: to help people, agencies and brands generate fresh ideas and tell great stories.

Gwen has led communications workshops for all kinds of professional teams, from fintech companies to food-business startups. She’s taught storytelling techniques to marketing pros, UNIX designers, and non-profit founders. She’s ghostwritten New York Times editorials, and she’s coached thought leaders through speeches, articles, and book projects. Her clients have included Nike Communications, Hunt & Gather, Hawkins International PR, UpWorthy, New_Public, The Economic Security Project, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, PayPal, SoundCloud, Nickelodeon, and many others.

Gwen honed her skills as a writing teacher and mentor when she served as Director of the Center for Writing and a professor of English literature at The Cooper Union in New York City. She got her professional start at Columbia University, where she first trained college writing teachers while she earned a Ph.D. in English.

She’s written four books: Thinking on the Page, Urban Italian, American Flavor, and Making a Man.
