2023 Holiday Survey

Holiday spending is expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels for the first time, according to Deloitte’s annual holiday survey. The survey is broken out into two reports: retail and travel.

Holiday Retail Survey
Deloitte’s annual holiday retail survey focuses on consumer spending, preferences, and timing. Key findings include:

  • Those with higher incomes will be responsible for the majority of holiday spending. Their shopping drivers and preferences are featured.
  • Shopping channel preferences and importance of sustainable products and packaging to young generations.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday are still popular shopping events, but about a quarter will shop during October sales events.

 

Holiday Travel Survey (2022 edition)
This survey focuses on holiday travel behaviors, demographic trends, and impact remote work has on travel plans.

Key findings:

 

  • Concerns about money and travel disruption are the biggest drags on travel demand.
  • Busiest travel days will likely come a the start of the holiday season.
  • Fewer Americans will travel, causing demand to weaken across most travel segments, especially hotels.
  • Older travelers are more likely to avoid travel due to potential travel disruptions and health reasons.
