Advertising Meets Radio

The first radio commercial ever was broadcast on WEAF New York. Direct selling was prohibited, so radio host H.M. Blackwell created his own “indirect direct” method. It was a 10 minute talk extolling the virtues of living a carefree life in the suburbs at the Hawthorne Court Apartments in Jackson Heights, Queens. The 10 minutes cost $50.
