The annual briefing launches earlier to drive agency action, with expanding tools, partnerships and initiatives to follow throughout 2027

NEW YORK, [October 15, 2026] — The American Association of Advertising Agencies (4As) today released 4As | 4sight Briefing 2027, its annual agency planning briefing. This year’s theme, The Value Reset, examines the gap between the value agencies create and the value clients recognize, measure and reward and identifies actions to close it.

Released earlier than ever to support agencies’ fall planning, the briefing features full-length interviews and perspectives from across and beyond the advertising industry, including agency leaders, marketers, search consultants, creators, industry disruptors and journalists, among others. It calls on leaders to use these insights to assess their businesses, identify where value is being lost and make closing those gaps a priority in their 2027 plans.

“The value gap is widening, and every planning decision is an opportunity to address it,” said Justin Thomas-Copeland, CEO of the 4As. “This briefing is a wake-up call for agency leaders to examine their businesses, challenge assumptions and act. We have to be deliberate about defining our value, demonstrating our impact and charging for the expertise we bring.”

The briefing identifies four interconnected fault line:

  • Client C-suite perception: Agencies and their clients’ executive teams often operate with different definitions of value. Agencies describe creativity, capabilities and campaign performance. CEOs, CFOs and procurement leaders evaluate growth, operational efficiency, risk and enterprise outcomes. When we cannot connect those conversations, we leave others to decide what our contribution is worth.
  • Remuneration: AI is eroding weakening the relationship between effort and value. Agencies can develop new capabilities and help clients make better decisions in less time, while compensation remains closely tied to hours and staffing. When fewer hours mean lower fees, agencies risk turning their own productivity gains into a revenue penalty.
  • Talent: Research, reporting and first drafts have long served as training grounds for agency talent. Automating those tasks changes how people develop judgment, craft and an understanding of client businesses. The 4As.4sight briefing identifies a risk that agencies improve near-term efficiency while weakening the apprenticeship and management pathways that produce future leaders.
  • The work: AI makes production faster and more accessible, increasing pressure on agencies to explain what makes their work distinctive and valuable. Agencies cannot expect clients to pay a premium for work they see as interchangeable. Yet  over-emphasis on speed, volume and utilization can squeeze the exploration, debate and experimentation behind original ideas. Are we using AI to raise our ambition, or simply to produce more of what already exists? This is a central question the briefing pushes agency leaders to examine honestly.

Each fault line is examined through three critical dimensions: the AI Factor, Policy Watch and the Media Lens, with candid industry conversations, examples of success and actionable next steps.

This briefing is the first chapter of an ongoing commitment to help agencies close the value gap.

One of the first planned rollouts being explored and developed in partnership with the ANA, is a shared Value Framework, a research report examining in detail the value gap that exists between clients and agencies and identifying opportunities to close that gap. This report is expected to be released in December 2026. Among other initiatives expected to launch in the coming months is a study on pricing deliverables, already underway. The recently launched 4As Intelligence platform gives members on-demand access to trusted 4As proprietary  research and expertise, with sourced answers to support business decisions. The 4As is currently in the process of enhancing the platform to include specialized agents, with each agent having their own capabilities and knowledge base, making a range of subject matter expertise more easily accessible to members. In response to the volume of policy-related questions the 4As receives, a specialized policy offering is expected to roll out in early 2027. The team is working with members to identify other agents they would find the most valuable.

“The real work is in the action we take together,” said Thomas-Copeland. “The 4As will continue to build industry partnerships and practical solutions that help agencies capture more of the value they create. We are committed to helping and giving confidence to our members to raise these  critical topics during their planning cycles. What matters is turning these findings into decisions and actions that close the value gap.”
