Leaders Must
Get Uncomfortable

Agencies cannot assume clients understand their value. They must define it, demonstrate it and continually reinforce it. Agency leaders should begin asking tough questions.

  • Can every senior leader clearly explain the agency's value in business, not marketing, language?
  • Are client conversations reaching beyond marketing into finance, operations and executive leadership?
  • What are the shared business KPIs we can develop with our clients, rather than relying on just campaign and marketing metrics?
  • Are business reviews discussing enterprise outcomes rather than simply campaign performance?
  • Are we proactively educating clients on emerging issues such as AI governance, organizational capability and strategic transformation?

Every agency should identify where it has become indispensable; not simply because of what it produces, but because of how it helps clients make better business decisions and drive better business outcomes.

The agencies that maintain strategic influence will not necessarily be those producing the most work. They will be the ones most capable of helping organizations navigate uncertainty.

  • "Agencies must answer the business impact pain points to all the stakeholders, not just the emotional pain point to the top marketer."

  • "If you want to influence the CEO and CFO, it comes back to: how do you demonstrate what you're doing is a journey towards predictable growth."

  • "The conversation that senior marketers want to have is "I want a partner in growth." The question for agencies is: How are you going to be a growth partner versus a savings provider?"

  • "The agency's value moves upstream: defining the right problem, making the right choices, helping the client act with confidence. That's what they should be selling."
