The Unstoppable Force - Agency Expertise + Maverick Creativity of Creators

Strategic and creative risk has become a cost-center decision rather than a growth strategy. The ambition budget got cut along with the headcount. Having optimized so hard for speed and efficiency, agencies now can't explain why a client should pay a premium for thinking a prompt or an algorithm can approximate.

AI has accelerated a trend that was already underway. Clients expect:
Greater speed
Greater flexibility
Greater efficiency

Meanwhile, agencies face continuing pressure on margins and staffing.

The temptation is obvious: use AI primarily to reduce costs and produce more deliverables with fewer people. But if every agency follows that path, efficiency quickly becomes table stakes rather than competitive advantage.

The competitive question becomes: What are clients paying a premium for that technology alone cannot provide

Increasingly, the answer is likely to be strategic thinking, creative judgment, original ideas and the courage to recommend solutions clients didn't know to ask for.

The industry has become extraordinarily good at optimizing execution. Less attention has been paid to protecting the conditions that produce exceptional thinking.

Creative ambition, strategic exploration and thoughtful experimentation are increasingly difficult to justify when measured against utilization targets, delivery timelines and quarterly financial performance.

Many agencies have unintentionally optimized away the very activities that create disproportionate client value.

The issue isn't AI. The issue is confusing efficiency with effectiveness. Clients rarely remember agencies because they delivered work faster. They remember agencies because they changed the trajectory of a brand or business.

That requires time, curiosity, debate, experimentation, and occasionally the willingness to challenge conventional thinking. Those activities are becoming harder—not easier—to protect.

  • "Do not optimize away the space for accidental discovery. Creativity requires friction. It requires debate and non-linear thinking. So don't walk away from that space that allows that to happen."

  • “We didn't build this industry for efficiency, we built it for effectiveness. There's a lot that will change in how we can use AI effectively and hopefully the impact our creative ideas can have."
