You can't invest with confidence without a common baseline.
The questions from the C-suite never change: How do you prove it? Where do you prove it? Which channels can you prove it on? Agencies have been answering those questions as rigorously as each environment allows. What limits the answer is that measurement is being built channel by channel, each on its own terms, not always using a shared standard to measure against.
Retail media shows both the promise and the limits of channel-by-channel measurement. Its closed-loop data is valuable, which is why budgets have followed it. But each network defines performance in its own way, so results are hard to compare across networks, let alone against the rest of the plan. Streaming and emerging AI platforms face similar challenges as their measurement models evolve.
AI tools show a similar gap.
In a 2026 survey of 500 advertisers, 88% reported some form of AI-driven performance improvement, but the most common gain was reduced time on manual optimization (62%), while only 27% cited improved return on ad spend (StackAdapt, The AI Delegation Gap(opens in new tab)).
The efficiency gains are easy to see, but the business impact is harder to prove.
This affects how plans get built. New environments need proof to earn budget, but budget is what funds the learning that produces proof. So dollars stay where they already are, and plans can drift from where customers actually are. What's needed is a consistent baseline across channels and within them, built with the platforms, so marketers can compare results and invest with confidence.
